Assessment of Salivary Hormones

چکیده
" Hormones " are messenger molecules that are released by specialized neurons in the brain and by glands into the bloodstream, and that carry a signal at the speed of blood to other parts of the body. Which specific responses they trigger in target organs depends on the receptors involved and the functions of the organs. For instance, the peptide hormone arginine vasopressin (AVP) regulates water retention in the body when it binds to receptors in the kidneys, but enhances episodic memory when it binds to receptors in the brain (e.g., Beckwith, Petros, Bergloff, & Staebler, 1987). Thus one hormone can drive several different physiological and psychological functions through its effects on several target organs. Generally, two broad classes of hormonal effects on physiology and behavior are differentiated. " Organizational effects " are lasting influences that hormones exert on the organism, thus changing its shape and functional properties in subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) ways. Orga

Quantitative assessment of salivary gland function by radioisotopic scanning in a randomized trial of Pilocarpine for prevention of radiation induced Xerostomia [Persian]
Introduction: Radioisotope scanning is the best method for objective assessment of salivary gland function. Thus, it was used in a randomized trial of concomitant pilocarpine for assessment of radiation-induced xerostomia, in addition to subjective evaluation by an approved questionnaire and objective standard xerostomia grading. Methods: Patients randomized in placebo-controlled trial of...
متن کاملSalivary testosterone, cortisol, and progesterone: two-week stability, interhormone correlations, and effects of time of day, menstrual cycle, and oral contraceptive use on steroid hormone levels.
With salivary assessment of steroid hormones increasing, more work is needed to address fundamental properties of steroid hormone levels in humans. Using a test-retest design and radioimmunoassay assessment of salivary steroids, we tested the reliability of testosterone, cortisol, and progesterone levels across two weeks, as well as the effects of oral contraceptives, menstrual cycle phase, and...
متن کاملA revolution in biomedical assessment: the development of salivary diagnostics.
Since the early 1900s, saliva has proven to be a noninvasive medium from which to measure a wide range of hormones, pharmaceuticals, and antibodies. It has also proven to be a convenient source of host and microbial DNA. As we enter the era of genomic medicine, increasing use of salivary diagnostics will help catalyze a shift from disease diagnosis to health surveillance. However, with the adva...
متن کاملAssessment of salivary free cortisol levels by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) in patients treated with mitotane.
OBJECTIVE Mitotane is an adrenocytolytic agent used in adrenocortical carcinoma, inducing adrenal insufficiency, requiring replacement treatment. Such therapy is not easy to monitor because of mitotane interference. Salivary cortisol reflects a free fraction of plasma cortisol and may be useful in such patients. DESIGN The aim of our study was to evaluate salivary cortisol by HPLC coupled to ...
متن کاملImmunohistochemical Assessment of Ki-67 Expression in Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Salivary Glands
Objective Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant tumor originating from the salivary glands. It’s rather bland histological appearance that masks its ultimate biological aggressiveness. Evaluation of cell cycle and mitoses have been useful in predicting malignancy in many tumors. Ki-67 antigen is a human nuclear antigen that presents during all active phases of cell cycle. The aim ...
متن کاملSalivary and Serum Ferritin Levels: Is There a Correlation?
Background and Aim: Blood samples are used for the diagnosis of many diseases. Serum ferritin level is known to be a marker of anemia and iron overload disorders. However, blood collection is an invasive method. Saliva, as a bio-fluid, contains a va-riety of important components that are successfully used for assessment of body health. The use of saliva samples for ferritin evaluation can be re...
